Introduction

This 3 Day Desert Trip From Marrakech is one of the most popular journeys in Morocco — and for good reason. In just three days you will cross the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, stand before the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, drive through the stunning Dades Valley, walk between the towering walls of the Todra Gorge, and finally arrive at the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga — where a camel ride into the desert and a night under the stars await you. Fully private, fully flexible, and designed entirely around you.

Day 01 — Marrakech — Ait Benhaddou — Ouarzazate — Dades Valley

Your driver will pick you up directly from your accommodation in Marrakech for an early morning departure heading south. The journey begins with one of the most scenic drives in Morocco — the road climbs steeply through the High Atlas Mountains and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters above sea level. The views from the top are breathtaking, with Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides and snow-capped peaks stretching in every direction.

We descend toward Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage ksar that has served as the backdrop for some of the world’s most famous films, including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. We stop here for a guided walk through the ancient fortified village and time to explore at your own pace.

We continue to Ouarzazate — the Hollywood of Africa — for lunch and a visit to the impressive Taourirt Kasbah. In the afternoon, the road heads east through the Skoura palm oasis, where thousands of date palms rise like a green mirage from the dry desert floor. We continue through the Dades Valley, following the river through deep gorges where the ruins of ancient kasbahs sit among traditional Berber villages. We arrive in Boumalne Dades in the evening.

Day 02 — Dades Valley — Todra Gorge — Merzouga

After breakfast, we set off along the legendary Route of a Thousand Kasbahs — one of the most scenic roads in Africa. Our first stop is the spectacular Todra Gorge in Tinghir, where 300-meter walls of rose-colored limestone tower over a clear mountain river running along the canyon floor. We take a walk through the gorge and stop for lunch at one of the local restaurants nearby.

In the afternoon, we continue east through the pre-Saharan plains toward the holy town of Rissani — the birthplace of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty and the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region. A brief stop here gives you a taste of authentic southern Moroccan life before the final stretch to Merzouga.

As you approach the village, the Erg Chebbi dunes appear suddenly on the horizon — a wall of golden sand rising from the flat plains. Your camel trek is waiting. A short trek into the dunes brings you to your desert camp just in time for sunset. Spend the evening with traditional Gnawa music around a campfire, dinner under the open sky, and a night in a comfortable nomadic tent.

Day 03 — Merzouga — Ouarzazate — Marrakech

Set your alarm early — the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of the most extraordinary sights Morocco has to offer and missing it is simply not an option. Watch the light change the color of the sand from deep orange to pale gold as the sun climbs above the horizon. After breakfast at the camp, we begin the long drive back to Marrakech.

We follow the same Route of a Thousand Kasbahs westward, with a lunch stop in Ouarzazate before crossing back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The afternoon drive through the mountains is just as beautiful on the return journey. We arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening with a drop-off at your accommodation.
